"My three children and I had to live in a shelter. We could only live in the shelter for so long before they moved us out. The shelter didn't offer a program that helped us find housing. We had no place to go and I could not qualify for an apartment. We moved into a hotel. I had a job and I was working but most of my money was going into keeping us into a hotel that cost $80 a day.
After 6 months, I could not keep paying daily for the hotel by myself and began to ask friends and family for help. However, after several months of help from family and friends, their ability to financially contribute ended. Thrive After DV came along and allowed us to apply for microgrants when short on the hotel cost or when I needed transportation to work. What was great about Thrive is that there is not a maximum amount of times I am allowed to request funds. When I needed help, if they had the funds, they would provide it.
Thrive also helped with the cost of moving from the hotel to a new apartment. A few times I was stuck at work, Thrive provided me with a transportation microgrant to make it home to my children. Thrive After DV really helped us not live on the streets." - L., NJ
"I have been very ill for years and out of work. I had went to many local agencies in Austin, TX and the few that helped me, their programs had a limited amount of times I could receive help. So when my eviction notice arrived in November just before the holidays, there was no organization available to help me until the new year. Thrive After DV worked with me and stopped my eviction. They paid my back rent and fees in full on a weekend after hours. They are a true God send." - B., TX
"I fled an abusive coercive controlling relationship from another state and moved to the Austin area with my two children with nothing. My children and I shared a one bedroom and bed in a house for six months until I learned of Thrive After DV. Although I had a job, I could not find an affordable three bedroom apartment. I was commuting an hour to work and spending a lot of money on gas. Thrive After DV came and found apartments closer to work -20 minutes away- that was less than my monthly budget. They took the time to tour properties while I was at work and sent videos and photos. Then Thrive After DV held a Community Housewarming fundraiser to help furnish my new place. Pots, pans, dishes, a kitchen table, washer and dryer, end tables, towels, and more were donated to help us start our new life." - L., TX
In August of 2023, we helped our first survivor find permanent affordable housing. Saving the family of three from elongated couch surfing and a gas-guzzling commute to work. However, affordable housing is only one part of the solution. This family has so many other needs in several areas.
Now that we have secured most of the larger pieces of furniture for them, they need a few more items. Take a look at the wish list to help them Thrive!
